Communications Research & Assessments

Communications Research & Assessments

With years of expertise, Gagen MacDonald can help provide the most efficient communication audit available to thoroughly understand your current environment across the varying stakeholder groups.

Our view on metrics and measurement is to build strong, conclusive research. In addition to applying traditional research methods, we actively work with experts from all fields to redefine and build solutions to help organizations become more effective. We have in-depth experience in using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques to measure our impact on business performance.

We conduct all of our quantitative assessments — from design to analysis — using strict standards that ensure the validity and reliability of employee engagement survey results. Our qualitative assessments are conducted with equal rigor, trained interviewers and in-depth content analysis techniques.

Primary Research:
(Development of Internal Trends & Benchmarks)

Qualitative research:

Our interview techniques and focus groups are designed to explore key themes and insights; uncover gaps between current and desired future state; develop vision statements; and uncover the subtleties, nuance and richer detail of key behaviors and change drivers.

We have skills in:

  • Interview and focus group design and facilitation.
  • Content analysis.
  • Development and review of research findings.

Quantitative research:

Through a proprietary quantitative approach to communication effectiveness, we measure:

  • Information flow blockages and barriers across the organization and compare to industry benchmarks.
  • Effectiveness and impact of current channels, vehicles and/or programs.
  • Leadership communication behaviors critical to success.

Our quantitative measures and benchmark analyses provide a baseline to identify the highest return for investment in communication resources and the impact of improving communication effectiveness on key performance metrics.

Secondary Research:
(Development of External Trends & Benchmarks)

Through secondary research, we can prepare cost-effective benchmarking reports with access to best practice information and research studies from leading corporations and key industry sources. We also have our own proprietary data related to best practices, organizational structure, responsibilities and capabilities critical to developing a corporate communications organization that can enable sustainable business performance.

Together with our research partners, we offer the following capabilities:

Communications Audit:
Through a blend of qualitative (leader and employee intakes and focus groups) and quantitative (Communication Effectiveness Assessment and other customized surveys) tools, Gagen MacDonald can get a clear and empirical sense of where your vehicles exist, what messages they carry and how effectively information is flowing through and resonating within different pockets of the company.

Customized Employee Engagement Surveys:
This tool provides reliable and valid data on the “soft” engagement drivers of your company’s specific performance metrics such as productivity, quality, and retention.

Corporate Culture Assessments:
Customized assessment (including quantitative and qualitative elements) that measures an organization’s performance against those cultural dimensions that drive specific business objectives.

Information Flow™ Evaluation:
Standard assessment that diagnoses the barriers and blockages in the movement of complete, accurate, candid and timely information in an organization. The assessment provides external benchmarks for clients to assess performance in comparison to other organizations (including industry peers).

Leadership Effectiveness Survey:
This tool generates a baseline of individual leadership strengths, needs and improvement areas, as well as practical recommendations for performance improvement.

Literature Review:
An analysis of thousands of published studies (drawing from the legal, medical, business and behavioral sciences fields) linking engagement to performance improvements, with an emphasis on those industries most relevant to your organization.

Linkage Analysis:
This approach uses hard business metrics to assess the correlation between communications and subsequent business outcomes. It is sometimes also used to assess the reliability, validity and business utility of an existing employee survey tool (an equivalency study with trending data).

Qualitative Interviews & Focus Groups:
In-depth discussions to uncover both rational and emotional elements to leadership alignment, employee motivation and overall engagement. We provide clients with experienced and trained moderators who can lead the discussions in many languages.

Change Readiness Assessments:
A blend of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, this assessment diagnoses the state of change readiness across an organization and identifies gaps in employee understanding and perceptions that could influence the successful outcome of change efforts.

Communication Channels and Vehicles Assessment:
This customized assessment helps clients gauge the effectiveness of existing and future communication channels/vehicles. The tool provides the receiver perspective on the use, relevance and business impact of specific communication tools and programs.

Employee Sentiment:
Using a range of research tools to understand and measure sentiment, this approach generates insights instrumental to helping management gain a competitive edge in shaping the programs, strategies, tactics and messaging that can be leveraged to retain and attract the best employees. This understanding of sentiment is derived across a range of inputs.

Language Strategy:
Multifaceted research methodology based on instant response dial sessions, quantitative surveys and qualitative intake. This approach helps clients craft language that resonates with employees, develop relevant messaging and reframe the conversation around key issues.
