Craig Smith

Craig comes to Gagen MacDonald with 30 years in communications roles at blue chip companies in the U.K. and the U.S.

He is a strategic communications leader with global experience in internal communications, change communications, employee engagement, vision development, media relations, and organizational transformation.

Before joining Gagen MacDonald, Craig was Head of Internal Communications at Travelers, one of the largest property casualty insurers in the U.S., where he was responsible for corporate employee communications and the Travelers Annual Report. He oversaw communication to business unit employees and led communications for the company’s international division. He created Travelers’ first enterprise-wide internal communication strategy and oversaw development of the company’s award-winning intranet.

As Vice President of Employee Engagement and Strategic Communications at The Hartford, he created communication strategies to drive employee engagement in support of the company’s business strategy. He transformed a 46-member internal communications function into a strategic team of business partners and trusted advisors, and was responsible for defining the company’s corporate vision.

Craig held a variety of roles at Accenture in London and Chicago, including Communications Director for the Global HR function. In this role, he led development of the Accenture Career Experience, the company’s employee value proposition. He was also responsible for repositioning Accenture’s global internal news magazine to meet the needs of the rapidly growing company—an effort that was awarded a bronze anvil from the Public Relations Society of America. He also created the first internal communication strategy for Accenture’s employees in India.

Craig also served in internal communications positions at UBS Investment Bank and UBS Americas, Whitbread, National Power, and BP.
