Hi, welcome to Let Go and Lead. Today we’re here with Patricia Harrison whose CEO of The Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Pat, thanks so much for joining us. I really appreciate this.
You know, many people think they know about The Corporation for Public Broadcasting but probably think you do programming and actually you don’t. That was interesting to me. Can you tell me a little bit about the mission of the organization?
Absolutely, and, and it’s easy to get confused. There are so many initials, CPB, PBS, NPR. But the one thing to remember about The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is that we were created by Congress to be the steward of the Federal appropriation that goes to America’s public media stations. And, in terms of being a steward, that means we invest in content that educates, inspires, and entertains; and our goal through our stewardship is to strengthen and advance public media so it continues to be relevant in the lives of all Americans today.
So what is the purpose of public media? It’s really, uh, to help create citizens and now more than ever before I think that submission
And what are your values as the, as the organization that would enable character to remain so true to itself?
That, that’s so interesting to me because as I have, uh, traveled to every state and met with all of the general managers what you find out people who are in public media are attracted to public media, uh, because of shared values. Uh, commitment to providing content that matters. This is, this is a mission, an individual mission. At the end of the day when they go home they feel good about the jobs that they have because they are part of the community; integrity.
People especially now, they want to feel that their lives mean something. They don’t want to just get up in the morning and go to a job and then go home. I mean it’s, it’s hard because right now jobs are not plentiful and so you have to support your family. But while you’re doing that you really want to feel that the mission you have for you own life can be fulfilled through work because you spend so much time in the workplace. So we’re very fortunate. People identify with our mission, most people.
