On Purpose (2:02)

MARIL MACDONALD:
Okay, so, I know you’re a big believer in the power of purpose, tell me a little bit about that?

ERIC RYAN:
Yeah, it’s um, I, I think you know as human beings there’s a couple of ways we can be happy and this is something like I’ve been inspired a lot by Tony Hsieh and, and Zappos who’s a close friend — and the belief that um, you know to truly be happy you have to be part of something bigger than yourself.  And so, for us I think that’s a big part of the mission and you know inspiring a happy, healthy home and getting toxicity out of our home and you know those things that you’re going to work and it’s, it’s more than just making money, it’s actually having a social purpose.

Really elevates um, you know I think our, our overall role in the business and inspires us to work harder than what we would probably normally do if it’s just for the, the pursuit of money.

MARIL MACDONALD:
Yeah, they all — you know there’s that old adage people work for a paycheck, they’ll die for a cause, right?

ERIC RYAN:
Yes, exactly.

MARIL MACDONALD:
Right?  And so often companies seem to miss that opportunity to create the cause.

ERIC RYAN:
And we said from day one um, you know don’t start a business start a cause.

ERIC RYAN:
And, and we too didn’t want to — you know selling soap sounds so lame but trying to rid the world of dirty, like that’s way cooler.

That sounds you know, that’s something you want to be part of.

First is being a soap peddler.

Like I want to, I want to make the world a, a little bit of a cleaner place, not, not just ah, see if I can sell more product.

MARIL MACDONALD:
Yeah, that’s great.  And that’s one of the things that’s so — differentiates you, right?

ERIC RYAN:
Totally.

ERIC RYAN:
— people against dirty and you know it’s more than a tagline, it’s the way we think about everything that we do and, and having that greater social cause and social mission it — again, it inspires us ah, in our work to um, to reach bigger than if we were just selling soap.
