The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)announced its 2018 Special Award Winners, naming Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) the winner of the Gold Quill Business Issue Award for BMS’ project “Equipping an Organization for Successful Large-Scale Transformation.”

The prestigious 2018 Gold Quill Business Issue Award is presented to an organization that addresses a critical business issue threatening the well-being or viability of that organization and demonstrates an effective, innovative resolution with measurable results.

BMS is a global biopharmaceutical leader—its oncology medications are unparalleled. Responding to intense competition, accelerating scientific advances, and emerging opportunities, BMS proposed to transform its entire operating model. Where most companies focus solely on the tactics and structures of change, BMS partnered with Gagen MacDonald to focus instead on human transformation, building employee understanding of necessary change, its significance to the company’s future, and its importance to the flawless delivery of critical cancer medicines to patients.

2018 Gold Quill Award evaluators selected BMS’ entry based on its demonstrated “research, effective planning and implementation, . . . engaging employees at all levels of the organization.” They commended BMS for its well-crafted communications approach “focused on the structure and culture of the company,” which included “audience surveys before planning the program, to detailed tactical execution in differentiated modes of engagement.” They also noted that “the desired results were exceeded, with 95 percent of employees willing to embrace new ways of working to help the company compete.”

IABC Gold Quill Special Award winners are recommended by evaluators, selected by the Gold Quill Awards chair, vice chair, and past chair, and represent the very best entries from across the globe. Awards will be presented at the Excellence Gala on Tuesday, June 5 at IABC’s World Conference in Montreal.
